29 septembre - On fête les 80 ans d’André. Celebrating Andre’s 80th birthday

At the end of September along with our neighbours Françoise and Andre and their family, we celebrated Andre’s 80thbirthday.  A great day, which started with a ‘bubble bath’ – known here as Soupe de champagne, an aperitif with bubbly, Cointreau, lemonade.  Dangerous.

La table est prète.  The table is ready.

Dans la cuisine, Fred au bouleau. In the kitchen, Fred at work.

Tourin d’argent (c’est à dire, oseille)  Theoretically, silver soup.  In fact, it’s a play on words – slang for money (or silver) being oseille, or sorrel – ‘the green stuff.’

Harry fait chabrol.  Harry drinks his wine with his soup - aka 'chabrol'

A little ‘salad’ – with stuffed goose neck, smoked duck, and of course, duck gizzards (better than they sound)

Seafood ‘nest’ – vol au vent with fish, mussels, and a number of other things that I can’t remember.

Something to refresh the palate – pear sorbet with pear eau de vie.

Et puis le plat prncipal.Volaille forestière – sauce aux morilles.  On commence a ralentir.
Chicken with morel sauce, and unusually here, lots of vegetables.  We’re starting to slow down.

Bien sûr, du fromage.  Of course, the cheese.

Et des figues du jardin.  Some figs from the garden.

Philippe arrive avec le ‘gâteau.’  Philippe with the birthday ‘cake.’

Beau, et bon.  Good tasting and good looking.

Francoise suggested that we stay for ‘soup and ham- supper.’  We couldn’t possibly, and even her family couldn’t eat any more.  18.30, and home
