Une journée en ville – a day in town

Vraiment bien.
Although we often say that we come to ‘Cape Town’ in the winter, in fact we stay in Gordon’s Bay, about 40 minutes from the centre of town, and rarely go in. Too much traffic, too little parking... But sometimes we decide to partake of a little culture. So Sunday we went to the South Africa Museum to see the World Wildlife Photography exhibition. Really good. Both museums are in Company’s Garden, established in 1852, and for a long time maintained by the East India Company. It has many historic plants and trees – and some of the best fed squirrels on the continent, apparently. (They reminded me of squirrels in Queen’s Park in Toronto, fed by all the university students.)

Then across to the Art Gallery, where we saw (again) Butcher Boys by Jane Alexander – stunning representation of the dehumanizing affects of apartheid http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Butcher_Boys
In addition, there was a fascinating exhibition of Soviet Union posters from WWII.

And then something completely different. We had heard about Canal Walk, a large shopping mall, and decided to check it out. First and last time. Huge, full of people, and breathtakingly weird.

After the market at Stellenbosch this morning we went off to the vineyard at De Trafford – not far, but quite isolated. We followed a narrow road through the mountains, and there, right at the end was de Trafford http://detrafford.co.za/

The wines are extremely good, all handmade – handpicked, put into bottles, even the labels are designed by the winemaker and his wife. We tasted several, and bought several (of course). Unfortunately then several Americans arrived, and since they are much louder and more aggressive than the poor Canadian-French, we decided it was time to explore the garden.

As it’s hot at last, we like to walk on the beach fairly early (and it gets light very early, so we’re awake earlier than we would be at home.
On n'est pas seuls. We're not alone

The back of table Mountain opposite on the other side of False Bay - and the moon.
