Comment on voyage - nos valises. How we are travelling - our luggage

Then, as we started getting ready, Harry suggested that we take only carry-on luggage with us, assuring me that we could do this. Hmmm… Several big decisions were to take only one laptop, and no extra camera lenses. That involved the purchase of another camera, but hey… In my orange carryon bag I did discover that I could fit 4 pairs of trousers, 4 shirts, 2 t-shirts, 2 bathing suits, sandals, slightly heavier shoes, plus underwear, medicines, cosmetic ( as much as could fit into one plastic bag) The computer case actually carries files, books, etc. A fleece jacket for cooler weather gets worn, as do the heaviest shoes. And one other essential ingredient. A jacket with 18 pockets, removable sleeves http://www.scottevest.com/v3_store/lightweight-wind-jacket.shtml. Holds camera, documents, IPod (even an IPad if we had one). I suspect we have exceeded the weight restrictions, but so far it’s working

Comment on voyage - où on se loge. How we are travelling - where we are staying

Then we had to find places to stay. We had friends to stay with in some locations – Canada, obviously, but also Hawaii. A quick look at rental rates in Sydney convinced us that we should pursue house exchange possibilities. After all, we have a house in France! Unfortunately most people are smart enough not to want to come to the south-west of France in the winter (although some actually do) But since we have a self contained apartment as part of our house, where we ourselves lived for most of 10 years while we rented out the larger part, we were able to offer ‘non-simultaneous’ exchanges. So we listed with http://www.homeexchange.com/show.php?id=130929 and gradually we had offers in New Zealand and Australia. Several people came to stay with us before we left, several others will come in 2011. So far we have been very pleased and impressed with the places we have stayed, and we hope they feel the same.

This is the house in Alstonville, in northern New South Wales, where we are spending almost 4 weeks. Sometimes it isn't raining!

Comment on voyage – les vols. How we are travelling -our flights

How we are travelling. Since we don’t have much to report from our (semi) flood zone, here is a little more information about what we are doing. We decided on a World Tour because we wanted to come to Australia to see Harry’s son and his family. Since we also wanted to get to Toronto to see family, principally his mother, it seemed logical to do it all in one go, rather than to go to Canada and back, then to Australia and back. Plus we could see more places on the way (and more airports, unfortunately)

So, we booked our Round the World flight with Star Alliance – for some reason much cheaper than doing a lot of individual flights. You just have to keep going in one direction, and take one of their partner airlines – Lufthansa, United, Air New Zealand, and Thai Air. http://www.staralliance.com/en/

De sécheresse et d'inondations - Of droughts and flooding rains.

The most beloved poem in Australian literature, written by Dorothea Mackellar in 1908

I love a sunburnt country

A land of sweeping plains

Of ragged mountain ranges,

Of droughts and flooding rains.

This week, we have a little of everything.

In Perth, Western Australia it’s 40 degrees, and there is an intense fire alert. Here in northern New South Wales and Queensland, after 10 years of drought, it’s been raining for 5 days, and the rivers are flooding.

Noel à Alstonville – Christmas in Alstonville

No tree or decorations, as we’re on holiday.
But some presents for Elizabeth, and a kiss for Harry
